Class Levels & Guidelines
For each event, there are 5 levels of classes that dancers may be registered in. We refer to these levels as Phazes. Each Phaze has a designated hotel ballroom that the dancers take classes in during each day of the event. This includes Phaze 1, Phaze 2, Phaze 3, Phaze 4 and the Assistant Teachers/Teachers room. Age guidelines are provided for each Phaze, but dancers final placement is at the teacher’s or independent registrant’s discretion and may be based on both the age and ability of each student. If you have any questions regarding what Phaze to place your dancer(s) in, please call Dupree Dance and we will gladly assist you in that process.
The suggested age guideline for each Phaze/Level is as follows:
Phaze 1 (age 4-7)
Phaze 2 (age 8-11)
Phaze 3 (age 12-15)
Phaze 4 (age 16-19)
Assistant Teachers (age 16 & up)
Full Time Teachers must be at least 18 years of age.
Dancers may choose to jump up or down a Phaze after taking a class or two at our events by visiting the Dupree registration desk. If a dancer decides to change to a different Phaze at the event, we request that this be done by or before 10 AM on the first day of classes. Refunds are not given if a dancer decides to jump down a Phaze, but dancers will be charged for an upgrade fee if the price of the classroom they are switching to is higher than the Phaze they initially registered for.
Dancers registered in the Phaze 1, 2, 3 & 4 Rooms are only permitted to take classes in their designated ballroom throughout the weekend. They may not ‘pick and choose’ classes to attend at different levels. Convention registered Assistant Teachers and Teachers are permitted to take classes in both the Teachers ballroom and any of the other classes throughout the weekend. Only registered Assistant Teachers and Teachers will be permitted to attend classes in the Teachers ballroom. The Teachers ballroom is closed to observers.
If a Teacher from a registered studio does not want to register to take any classes throughout the weekend and does not plan on attending any Teacher ballroom classes, he/she may opt to observe classes in our Phaze 1-4 rooms only but will still need to secure a paid observer band. Observer bands DO NOT gain access to our teachers ballroom at any time. The only thing that will gain access to our teachers ballroom is an Assistant or Teachers convention registration band and/or the Owner/Director badge that will be included in your registration packet (limit of 2 per studio). The Owner/Director badges are secured during the online registration process. Our "Free Teacher Offer" will be applied to the convention registration fees of any registered Full Time Teacher during the "Discounts and Special Offers" section of our online registration (Our Free Teacher Offer is described in our Special Offers and is for qualified studio registrations only).
The audition class in each ballroom is closed to observers and registered teachers and is designated only for the dancers who are registered in that ballroom and who are wearing the appropriate colored wristband. Dancers may not audition in a ballroom in which they are not registered. Registered Assistant Teachers are permitted to audition along with the Phaze 4 dancers during the designated Phaze 4 ballroom class schedule. Assistant Teachers are not permitted to observe the Phaze 4 auditions only. In order for Assistant Teachers to remain in the Phaze 4 audition class, they must plan on taking the audition class.
Performance/Competitive Dancer Selection
During the convention registration process, you will select a general 'level' for each dancer that you register in the Phaze 1, 2, 3 & 4 rooms. The 'performance' selection will apply to any dancer who trains an average of four hours or less a week. The 'competitive' level will apply to any dancer who trains an average of five or more hours a week. If a dancer falls immediately in-between these two criteria, we ask that the registrant use his/her best discretion when selecting a level for this dancer.
For convention classroom purposes, the performance or competitive level of each dancer is simply gathered, but it will not affect what ballroom (Phaze) you register that dancer in. As discussed in our "Class Phazes and Guidelines", we leave the discretion to the teacher as to where to place each dancer for classes and recommend that both age and ability be considered during this process.
If/when you choose to enter competition entries, the level of each dancer is considered at this time and our system will automatically place each competition entry in the Performance OR Competitive division based on the spread of the levels of registrants within each entry. If you do not choose to enter competition entries, it is still required that you select a general level for each dancer you register during the convention registration process. The level of a dancer can be edited from year to year, but cannot be altered by Dupree Dance within 2 weeks of our event due to the fact our competition information is completed at that time.
Observer Bands & Regulations
The Dupree Dance observer policy is in place to protect the safety of the registered dancers and the integrity of each event. Our observer policy ensures that every person in the dancers’ ballrooms is in direct association with our event and/or the registered dancers. Observers are not permitted in the Teacher Ballroom at any time. Observer bands MUST be worn throughout the entire event in order for observers to be permitted into the ballroom.
Observer bands are required for every attendee at our event age 7 and older. Non-registered siblings age 6 and under are free and do not require a band ONLY if they are accompanied and chaperoned by an adult observer and/or registered teacher at all times. Teachers who do not wish to take classes at any time may choose to forego the teachers convention registration, but must secure a paid observer band for themselves in order to watch classes in the Phaze 2-4 rooms. Observer bands do NOT gain access to the Teachers ballroom at any time.
An observer band is required for each observer in the Phaze 2, 3 and 4 Ballrooms. It is highly encouraged that observer bands are pre-secured during the online registration process for $25 per band. A free observer band will be given to observers in the Phaze 1 ballroom only, but Phaze 1 observer bands must still be reserved during the online registration process. The Phaze 1 observer bands will be a different color than the paid observer bands. There will be a max of 2 gifted Phaze 1 observer bands per every 1 registered Phaze 1 dancer. The Phaze 1 colored observer band will only allow observers into the Phaze 1 classes, no exceptions. NOTE: If any parent observer or non-registered teacher has a dancer in the Phaze 1 ballroom and another dancer in the Phaze 2, 3 or 4 ballroom, he/she will still need to purchase a paid observer band to wear along with the Phaze 1 observer band provided by Dupree.
Dupree Dance reserves the right to cut-off observer band sales at any time before or during the event. It is HIGHLY recommended that you pre-secure/pre-purchase Observer Bands during your online registration process, as they will only be sold at the event if space permits. Dupree Dance WILL NOT add any additional observer bands to your registration packet after the registration deadline for your event, STRICT. We will also not edit/change the amount of bands that you pre-reserved. You are responsible for full payment of the specific amount of bands reserved by you during the online registration process.
We prioritize the amount of space the dancers have in order to protect the integrity of each classroom. We spend time visually assessing the amount of observer space left at each event after the start of each levels first class. If Dupree Dance opts to open at-event observer band sales, they will cost $35 each and will not be sold until approximately 1/2 hour after our first class begins. Dupree is not responsible for lost observer bands. If space is available, a replacement band will still cost $35 at the event.
Our online registration will ask you to enter 2 separate numbers of observer bands. The first will be the number of requested Phaze 1 observer bands (limit of 2 per registered Phaze 1 dancer). Then second will be the number of paid observer bands for observers in the Phaze 2, 3 and 4 rooms.
Pre-purchased and pre-secured observer bands will be included in the registration packet that the Owner/Director or independent registrant picks up on the first morning of the event.
Our competition is free of charge for all audience and no observer bands will be needed during this time. We will also not monitor for observer bands on Sunday during the Closing Ceremony, Faculty Routine and Scholarship Presentation. Any and all parents/teachers who choose to not observe the classes are invited to watch and enjoy the dancers/faculty at this time. Registered dancers, teachers and/or any teachers who qualify for our "Free Teacher Offer" will be provided convention bands and do not require an observer band.
Observers are expected to adhere to the following observer regulations during our event.
We request little to no observer talking in the ballrooms during our event and ask that you please remain courteous and respectful throughout the weekend. We realize conventions are a nice ‘get away’ and secure great venues that allow both parents and dancers to enjoy themselves during all aspects of our event! We do a wonderful job of keeping the control and attention of dancers in the classroom, so we encourage observers to take advantage of the hotel amenities, common space or dining options if they would like to ‘catch up’ and enjoy conversation with other studio parents and attendees. We appreciate your cooperation in our Observer Policies and reassure you that these policies are set with your DANCERS in mind! We guarantee they are going to get what they came for!
* Please do NOT bring in coolers, glass containers, ice chests, etc. into the convention ballroom. Floor space is designated for our dancers and should remain clear.
* Do NOT place dance bags in chairs to ‘save’ seats. Dance bags are to go under the chairs and/or against the wall in each room.
* Consider the presence of younger siblings/toddlers in the classroom throughout the weekend. We know it is difficult for young children to remain quiet for long periods of time, so please feel free to entertain younger siblings in the common space that is offered by the hotel if necessary.
* Please keep younger children/siblings in your lap or on the floor directly in front of you, thus freeing up the limited amount of observer chairs for adults.
* We want to make sure our entire Audition Class is dedicated to the registered dancers and request that observers quickly clear the ballroom during the last 5-10 minutes PRIOR to the start of the audition class. Our Dupree faculty will remind you of this at the appropriate time.
* We kindly request that you minimize any ‘in and out’ traffic during classes.
Classroom doors will be constantly monitored during our event for observer bands and to ensure that the observer policies are followed.
